The 'Woman Question' & Enfranchisement

Olive Schreiner was a strong supporter of women’s suffrage, but always as part of her belief in universal adult suffrage. This was particularly so in the South African context, where the strategy of feminist groups in Europe and the US in promoting suffrage ‘on the same terms as men’ would later result in a racial, indeed racist, franchise, and was something that she consistently opposed. ‘The 'Woman Question' & Enfranchisement’ collection covers Schreiner’s involvement in the Cape Women’s Enfranchisement League, her resignation from it in protest against white women’s endorsement of a racial basis to the franchise campaign and her repeated rejections of this.

Schreiner’s letters regarding the WEL include those to Julia Solly, Caroline Murray, Minnie Murray, Lucy Molteno, Anna Purcell and others and are concentrated in the period from 1906 to around 1910. Many of them are ‘business’ letters concerned with the minutiae of WEL development, but with others providing some sharp analysis of strategy, tactics and points of principal. This collection also includes letters to friends in the British suffrage movement, most importantly to Frederick Pethick-Lawrence, in particular regarding Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence’s political ‘misunderstanding’ of the South African situation around the implications of women these gaining vote on same basis as men. Schreiner’s letters regarding international feminist organisations and personnel will be found in the ‘International Feminist Networks’ collection.
