Cyril Newton Thompson
Cyril Newton Thompson (‘Turnips’) (1891 - 1958) was a South African friend of Schreiner’s whom she seems to have come to know particularly while she was living in London during the First World War. Newton Thompson had been studying at the University of Cambridge when war broke out, and he joined the rifle brigade in 1915 and fought in France. In February 1917 he married the suffragette Joyce Nettelfold and in 1919 they settled in Cape Town where he practiced as an attorney.
