Paul Oliver Sauer
Paul Sauer was the son of Schreiner’s close friend Mary Sauer and her husband Johannes. He later became a prominent Afrikaner Nationalist politician in South Africa. This is deeply ironic considering Schreiner’s comment in a letter written to Mary Sauer shortly after his birth at the end of 1897: “Tell Mr Sauer Peter [ie. Paul] is not only going to be another voter, but he’s going to follow in the good path which his father followed in early youth but forsook!! he’s going in for equal rights, franchise for women, & all other good things!!!”
