Robert Hemming
Robert Campbell Hemming, son a prominent Cape Town civil servant, married Olive Schreiner’s sister Alice in 1863. He was for a time the post-master at Fraserberg and later ran a profitable general dealership there. Later, “he would also become a member of the Divisional Council and a Justice for the Peace” (Schoeman 1991: 279). He helped rescue the remnants of Schreiner’s from her house in Johannesburg destroyed during the South African War. He also provided financial and investment advice to many members of his extended family, much of which failed. Latterly in his life, he was centrally involved in the Johannesburg Public Library.
