Arthur Brown

Arthur Brown married Schreiner’s niece Effie Hemming in 1903. There are three extant letters from Schreiner to Arthur Brown, written mainly around welcoming him to the family and concerning family news. He worked as a shopkeeper, and with Effie he also became involved in running The Highlands, the large house from which Schreiner’s older sister Ettie Stakesby-Lewis ran various ‘social work’ ventures, including a home for unmarried girls, for alcoholics and for general ‘waifs and strays’.
