Ellen Sauerlander

Ellen Sauerlander was for a time the manager of the Grand Hotel at Muizenberg near Cape Town, owned by her mother, Mary Cavanagh. When Schreiner stayed at the hotel in early 1913 she wrote a few letters to Ellen Sauerlander to arrange various practicalities concerning her room, food and her bill. Schreiner also commented warmly on Ellen Sauerlander’s hospitality, including that “The thing that makes me like the Hotel is knowing you here though I see so little of you.”
