Mary King Roberts
Mary Roberts nee King was a friend of Schreiner’s who married Cambridge academic Dr Robert Davies Roberts in 1888. It appears that Schreiner came to know the couple during the 1880s. Her five extant letters to Mary Roberts are all versions which appear in Cronwright-Schreiner’s The Letters, and so need to be treated with caution regarding their likely in/accuracies as well as omissions. These ‘letters’ do however suggest Schreiner and Mary Roberts shared interest in the ‘woman question’ and regarding marriage in particular. Schreiner also wrote to Mary Roberts in 1900 concerning Cronwright-Schreiner’s anti-war lecture tour of Britain, hoping he might visit them in Cambridge.
