Mrs Weakley

Mary Weakley and her husband George Robert Weakley lived in Colesberg and employed Olive Schreiner as governess to their children in 1874 and 1875. When she first arrived the Weakleys had four children: Harry, Emma, Joseph and George, with a fifth, Burton, being born in July 1874, shortly after SchreinerÂ’s arrival. Mr Weakley ran a stationery and bookshop, and a newspaper. From all accounts Schreiner was over-worked to the point of exploitation at the WeakleysÂ’ and she eventually gave her notice and left Colesberg in February 1875.
