Bret Harte
Bret Harte (1836 - 1902) was an American novelist. Schreiner makes repeated reference in her letters to Harte’s Outcasts of Poker Flat (1869) and it is clear that she met Harte on more than one occasion. It is possible that some letters were exchanged between Schreiner and Harte, although none have been traced.
