Mrs E M Walters
Mrs E.M. Walters, sometimes referred to in Schreiner’s letters as Minnie, was a close friend of Schreiner’s during the 1880s. She had been approached as a possible member of the Men and Women’s Club by Elisabeth Cobb, but she lived in Yorkshire and was also actively involved in women’s suffrage activities, which meant she did not have time required to devote to the Club. From her many references to ‘Mrs Walters’ in her letters to Havelock Ellis, it is evident that Schreiner stayed with Walters on a number of occasions during the 1880s, and Walters also visited her elsewhere. In December 1884 Schreiner commented to Ellis on meeting Elisabeth Cobb, “I like her, but she isn’t equal to Mrs Walters. No woman is.” Walters later translated Letourneau’s books The Evolution of Marriage (1891) and Property (1892) for Havelock Ellis’s ‘Contemporary Science’ series. It is clear that letters were exchanged between Schreiner and Minnie Walters, although none have been traced.
