John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) was a British writer and philosopher whose work had a powerful and lasting influence on Olive Schreiner. Schreiner’s letters refer to the particular influence of Mill’s System of Logic (1843), and in October 1892 she wrote to John T. Lloyd, “The only man to whose moral teaching I am conscious of owing a profound & unending debt is John Stuart Mill; when I got home to Europe & found men & women whose views exactly coincided with indifference to his works or ridiculing them as old-fashioned, it was keenly painful to me; because they had been the channels through which most of the spirit of current modem science reached me.” Schreiner knew his step-daughter Helen Taylor when living in London in the 1880s.
