My darling Friend
I was quite disappointed that your last letter said nothing about your
going abroad. Why spend all the dreary winter in England when it is
the only time the most lovely parts of Italy are pleasant? How is
Hellen’s school going on? Have they opened it? Do many pupils
promise? Have you seen Isabella Ford? I am sure you will love her the
most of all my friends. Her address is Miss I. Ford, Adle Grange, nr Leeds
or 5 Hyde Park Mansions London. She is a splendid woman. It is
bitterly cold here already, but pleasant. The water like ice, but not
that terrible 14 or 16 degrees of frost there will be in the middle of
We leave for Cape Town on the 11th arriving there to-day two weeks
Sunday the 12th.
^My address there will be 32 Brownlow Road Tamboer’s Kloof. It is
much higher than Mrs Johnsons with a splendid view, but small rooms. I
am going there because its £2 a month cheaper. I hope I shall be free
of asthma as at Mrs Johnsons. If you write on getting this letter
address there for a few weeks as I shall get your letters so much
sooner than if they come to Hanover first. ^
Good bye my beloved friend

I shall be able to give you much news when I am in Cape Town.
^Send me some copies of the Lawrence’s paper the Echo, if you can^
