It was a terrible blow to me to get Miss Molteno’s note just now. My
only hope is that if you had left by the steamer you first meant you
would still have been just a few days too late. I hope this because I
know how terrible will be to you the thought that if you had left by
it might still have seen her. I keep trying to reckon out. I think it
was the Friday before I left town you were first to have left. Oh if
you could only have seen her before the end. I think it must have been
been the sense of this coming that has weighed on you so lately & made
you feel so restless. You know it was always such a comfort to me that
I did go down to Cape Town to see my mother, that time I felt suddenly
I must go from Uitkyk. I am wanting another note from Miss Molteno so
to know if she is well enough really to go with you on Wednesday

Good bye my sweet darling friend all my heart is with you.
