4 My dear Friend

6 It’s quite a fine afternoon, the sun shining a little. I am getting
7my house in order at last. In two days it will be all right. My dear
8little Kaffir is so nice. He is sitting out in the sun now trying to
9sun himself behind a heap of stones where it’s a bit sheltered. Cron
10will be returning next Wednesday likely from Johannesburg. I do hope
11the change to Houw Hoek will do Miss Molteno good. Cape Town & the
12coast certainly does not suit her. I am often thinking about your
13plans: to take a whole farm would perhaps tie you too much if you have
14so often to go to England. A nice house at Nels Poort seems to me
15really the thing that would answer most. You must not be too much
16alone & far from others. Mrs Van Zyl will have a room to spare likely
17after the end of this month, but you would feel the cold terribly,
18there being no fireplaces in the bedrooms. Thinking all over I think
19you had better put off your coming here till it is a little warmer. If
20you came now you would only spend a couple of days I know. If you came
21later you might spend a month. In September & October the weather here
22is like Paradise cold & stimulating with out much frost, though we
23still have it sharp at night. Oh it is so nice to be getting my house
24a little neat. But I’m going to try & let things go & make a little
25time for writing. I & won’t let people here depress me. I’ll just
26let them go & not care. If one once get to that point everything is
27easy. One must just realize that now the war is over there is no bond
28of sympathy between one & them, & be content. It’s sad, but so are
29many things in life one has just to put a little bit of deadness on.
