The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Hanover from September 1900 to October 1907, after 1902 with visits, sometimes fairly lengthy, elsewhere.
My dear Fan I am sending you my skirt. Please as soon as she has taken
the exact pattern get it back that it may not be about the work room;
it is all I have to wear.
I shall arrive on Wednesday evening.
Dear if you are going into Cape Town, don’t go on purpose, buy me a
pair of black gloves no 6 ½ soft kid & a yard of crepe that I can
trim my hat. I hate mourning but some how I feel she would have liked
me to wear black that day. Tell them to charge it with the serge &
lining & buttons to me. I would lave today but I am not feeling well
enough. If anything should prevent my coming I’ll wire you, dear.

Love to my dear old brother. He has been able to do so much for her &
I have done so little.
