6 The clothes will be most useful. If Mrs Molteno will send them I will

8here for the present, at the end of a year they may go to Uitenhage.
9I’m so glad you’ll be at Miller’s Point during the oppressive
10heat Cron writes of. How dark things are here I can’t explain. Give
11my love to Miss Greene. Say I see her in my mind’s eye pulling up
12the weeds.

14 Isn’t that a dastardly attack on Sauer on account of his colour in
15the Cape Times. It makes me love him. Poor old Sauer. If that isn’t
16hitting below the belt I don’t know what is.

Notation
The 'dastardly attack' on Sauer was in the Cape Times 13 April 1901. Rather than 'colour' and thus 'race' in the modern sense, the slur concerned his 'Dutch' or Afrikaner heritage.
