5 I’m so sorry Pompey is dead. Tell Miss M I got the whole £20.

7 There was a scare today again at 5 o’clock that the Boers were just
8outside the town, town guard called out &c &c. A man just outside the
9village was said to have been fired on by the Boers. I deeply hope
10they will not attack this place, they have nothing to gain by it, &
11the suffering & loss of life will be great.

13 Good bye dear. One’s head seems always always to ache so now-a-days.

17 Oh its just awful fancy its three months & more since I went for a
18walk. When I look at the koppjes & think who nice it would be to go &
19lie half a day on the top I could just cry. I want to get away from
20the village & the people then my head would leave ^off aching.^
