My dear Friend

I posted a note to you this morning, but am writing again to let you
know how much better I am. I will send you part of Cron’s letter to
read new week. What John Morley said about Milner is the best thing
yet said about him^; no one here has ever said anything better.^

It is wonderful air here. I have never breathed better anywhere, it is
astonishing. This is not an ugly place though some how, at least at
present I like it less than any place in the Karroo I have seen. But
if I get well & can work here, nothing matters.

How is Miss Smith? What are your plans about the school?

It is terrible here to get news so slowly of the war. The last news I
have is that Cronje is hemmed in between near Jacobs-dal & Roberts
will not grant 24 hours truce says he must fight or surrender. God
grant he fought & conquered; if not we must accept it. It doesn’t
matter how things go now; in the end history will be with the
Republics. That is what I cling to. I do not know how it is I cannot
feel more depressed.

When you have your next holidays where are you going?

Cron says that if the Boers could have had one or two more successes
France would have stepped in on behalf of the Republics, that Russia &
Germany are urging her to do so. If they can even now hold on till
April something may yet happen.

^The feeling in America for the Republics is growing rapidly.^

^Cron saw your brother Percy for a few moments & he asked him three
times to dine with him but Cron was full up with engagements. He hoped
to see more of him the next week. He got a seat for the opening of
parliament. He is ^was^ going in three weeks time to lecture in the
north.^
