5 I got most depressing news from Pretoria this morning from one of the
6head officials there. Tell me if you can by letter shortly what you
7feel. Be sure & close your letter carefully.

9 What is the meaning of Rhodes last speech? Is he trying to play up to
10your party; or is it something deeper. Does he feel war is just coming,
11 & wishes it to said he was not on that side so that he may in in for
12good pickings when it is over? Of course don’t answer this if you
13feel it too much effort. Save yourself for your work.
