8 There is an American friend of mine staying at Mount Nelson hotel for
9some days on her way from Johannesburg to England. ^Mrs Chapin^ She is a
10great friend of Mrs Chamberlain’s & Milners. She was very anxious to
11meet you. I told her I could not possibly promise that you would call,
12but that I would ask you too if you have time. She might give you some
13interesting news about the League in Johannesburg as she knows much.
14She is sympathetic to our side, but of course all you say may go
15straight to Chamberlain & Milner.

17 I have through my article come into contact with a very nice man for a
18millionaire, a man called Boucher, the head of the French commercial
19interest here. He is translating my article into French which is very
20good for a millionaire! Do you know him. We are not without friends in
21this country, but we have to pull our forces together. Return

The article referred to is An English South African's View of the Situation and was originally published in the South African News over three successive days; see 'Words in Season. An English South African's View of the Situation' South African News 1 June 1899 (p.8), 2 June 1899 (p.8) and 3 June 1899 (also p.8). It was also reprinted in a number of other newspapers. It then was published as a pamphlet, then as a book. A second edition of the book was ready but withdrawn from publication by Schreiner when the South African War started in October 1899, so as not to profit from this.
