Schreiner was resident in Berea, Johannesburg, from December 1898 until late August 1899.
We went to hear old Kruger in the square yesterday: we got good places,
just in front of him. I wished so you & Miss Green had been there.
The old man was to me a touching & impressive spectacle with his long
thin white hair, & closed eyes (his eyes are very bad) & the animation
lighting up the old face when he spoke till it looked youthful. He
made a fine speech. The printed accounts give no idea

^of its simplicity & directness.
