The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner postcard, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The month and year have been written on this postcard in an unknown hand and the postmark is illegible, but content shows it was sent from Rome, which Schreiner visited between 9 and 16 April 1897. The name of the addressee and the address it was sent to are written on the front of the card.

Thanks for the wire. I prize your thought of us. We shall be here a
2month Address Poste Restante Roma. We are not disappointed. The old
3Roman remains are stupendous in their meaning. I always see in them a
4great message to England. "Weighed in the balances, & found wanting!"
5They are very glorious.
