Dear Laddy
I was very glad to receive your letter in the Argus – a paper I never
see. If you write anything further send it me. Cron has been feeling
so very much drawn towards Hofmeyr & Ons Land that it was with
difficulty I restrained him from writing a long per letter to Hofmeyr,
of congratulation & approval! He has however contented himself with
writing a letter to Ons Land which I hope they will put in; I am
anxious that at the present moment everything that can be done to show
the Dutch throughout the country that there are some Englishmen who
can rise above all race prejudice, & deal look at recent events

Rive's (1987) version omits part of this letter and is also in a number of respects incorrect.
