My dear old Laddie

I don’t know what impells me to write to you this afternoon. I
always feel a bit restless & sad about you. Not because the existing
ministry may come to an end; but lest you should find those fail you
in whom you have put your trust. Perhaps you would say, "In Politics
one trust no one," but the worst is that one can hardly know much of
people without insensibly coming to care for them & even against ones
own keener insight, to trust them - & then if they fail one there is
apt to be a great time of bitterness. But I have done so much
idealizing of human beings in my time that perhaps I am apt to over
estimate the dangers people run in this way.

If ever Rhodes does play back entering into Sivewrights hand he will
find his mistake. I believe that Jamieson’s prophecy made years ago,
will yet come true & that Sivewright will be the undoing of Rhodes.

I am feeling very well & strong & able to work much. The weather here
is simply ideal. In summer I think we shall ^perhaps^ hire a house at
Matjesfontein for two months, as in Jan. & Feb the heat is simply
killing here. This is just a little word of love to you dear.
