Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The date of this letter is derived from the postmark on an attached envelope, which also provides the address it was sent to. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, but with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Thankyou so much for going to that hotel for me. I think I shall be
leaving this for Cape Town on the 24th & the wandering Jew will turn
up at Villa Flandre soon after that date. The heat here is great &
oppressive but I suppose it is so everywhere now.

I feel so sorry leaving Cron here - but I’ve taught the girl to make
good bread & to do the meat the way he likes it. He will be coming
down to Cape for Xmas & New Year, so he will get a bit of a change.

I am longing to hear more news about the children from Will. But I
expect the old man is so busy now he won’t have much time for
talking. I’m sorry I shan’t be in town to go to court when his
case about the colour question comes on, & I shall be just too late to
see Maud Allen. Personally I think I should dislike her because
she’s a great friend of Asquiths – whom I am not drawn to.
