This letter has been dated by reference to content, around the death of Gottlob Schreiner on 26 August 1876. Schreiner was resident at Ratel Hoek from May 1876 to January 1879. The letter is written on black edged mourning paper.

3 I think you will be glad to get a letter from me, though it is only a
4little one. I shall be glad when I get your likeness. You know you
5were only ^a^ wee baby thing when I saw you last & I want to see how you
6have grown. Are there any nice little girls in Fraserburg that you
7play with? I suppose you are all very fond of Ethelwyne. Has she got
8brown eyes like you? Are you learning to write already. You must write
9me a letter some day, & I’ll write you a long one!

11 It is cold here; the white snow is often on the mountains I wish you
12were here to look at it with me. It is very pretty.
