Dear Mary
It was such a disappointment to me that you were gone when I came; we
must have passed you on the sea.
Cron sent Mr Sauer this morning the copy of a letter he sent to the
Times in answer to that wonderfully low letter ?Wegman wrote about Mr
. Get him to show it you.
There has also been a disgraceful letter about Innes in the Globe. I
am sorry for unreadable not here when it was written. I do hope the
leading men at the Cape though they may not be able to work in one
Ministry, will yet combine to support one another at the present time.
I am sending you a copy of my little book "Peter Halket." Tell me what
you think of it.
Good bye my darling. I will write you a long letter from Rome. I hope
we shall leave next week; but there is so much to do here. Good bye my
