3Your photo is without any exception the best thing in the way of
4photographs I have ever seen, it has more the virtues of a painting
5than a photo.

7A certain Madame Gaston, in Pares has written to ask whether she may
8publish a translation of an African Farm she has made, but says the
9publisher will not take it unless I give a written undertaking that I
10have given permission to no one else. I can’t be sure at this
11distance of time but I almost fancy you & a woman friend once thought
12of publishing a French translation & that I said I should be glad. If
13this is so please notice that I withdraw my valuable consent!!

15I have just been reading Mary Robinson’s life of Renan. I put it
16with Dowden’s life of Shelly & Lewes’s life of Goethe as one of
17the only three good biographies

19^in the English language. I havent seen your article about the journey
20to Russia but am very anxious to do so. Have you a spare copy you can
21send me. I’ll send you my photo when I’m taken^
