Dear Mr Hodgson

I hope you didn’t think I was unsympathetic about the poems; but I
would as soon think as soon think of any one trying to improve
Shakespear or Shelley as the Bard of D---. The poems seem to me too
beautiful & perfect for words. Are you even sure that your alterations
bring them nearer the originals? When a thing has been beautifully &
well done, it seems to me always best to leave it alone, as the person
made it.

I did enjoy the play so much. I think in these depressing times one
wants all one can get to stop one from thinking for a little time.
Even fox hunting – if only there were no fox – would be heavenly!

Yours ever
Olive Schreiner
