Dear Mr Unwin,

How about the “Political Situation”? You once sent us £10 (I
think that was the amount); but we have had no statement of sales yet.
Will you please let me have the statement with settlement of whatever
amount may be due?

Your letter containing your offer for “Stray Thoughts”, in book
form, reached Mrs Schreiner some weeks ago. You will no doubt hear
from her later. She is very much better I am glad to say, and at work
on the essays (“Stray Thoughts”).

Up-country parts are suffering from an awful drought.

With kinds regards from Mrs Schreiner & myself,
I am
Yours very sincerely,

Notation
A set of Schreiner's 'Returned South African' essays was to have been published as 'Stray Thoughts on South Africa'. However, although prepared for book publication, a dispute with a US publisher and the events of the South African War (1899-1902) prevented this. They and some other essays were posthumously published as Thoughts on South Africa.
