Legend
When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Mrs. Francis Smith.

... I don't think I shall get better in Africa, as I might have in the
Riviera; the climate there has never suited me, only England is worse
- but it's my own land. Here when Oliver is gone I would have no one
to see about my being embalmed and sent out to Africa to be buried
with my husband and my little girl and my dog Nita on the top of the
mountain where I bought four acres of ground more than 20 years ago.
Cron says he will give orders for his body to be buried there wherever
he may die. So we shall all be together at last.
