When Cronwright-Schreiner prepared The Letters of Olive Schreiner, with few exceptions he then destroyed her originals. However, some people gave him copies and kept the originals or demanded the return of these; and when actual Schreiner letters can be compared with his versions, his have omissions, distortions and bowdlerisations. Where Schreiner originals have survived, these will be found in the relevant collections across the OSLO website. There is however a residue of some 587 items in The Letters for which no originals are extant. They are included here for sake of completeness. However, their relationship to Schreiners actual letters cannot now be gauged, and so they should be read with caution for the reasons given.
To Havelock Ellis.
London, 8th Mar.
At last I really am better. What I've had was measles for the third
time! After some days of terrible headache I came out the most
extraordinary rash all over my face and chest, etc. For a couple of
days I lay nearly insensible, not eating or drinking or moving, and in
a dazed sort of way I kept thinking: "It's just like I felt when I had
I measles" - but of course I thought it couldn't be. Now I find that
the little boy in the room next mine, and whose mother and sister
(who’ve been nursing him) I sit next to, has had a most terrible
attack of measles! He was in bed a week before me. I've certainly had
it three times now, when I was a child, again at Matjesfontein, when I
nearly died with it, and now. I'm now quite well, only my head still
feels tired. I'm going out on the top of the bus to Hampton Court
to-morrow. It would be so nice if you were near, perhaps you could go too.
