Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract.
…I had a terrible fright this morning. The black girl suddenly
called out the mierkats were being attacked by a strange dog; far away
on the Railway line I saw three strangers & a white dog & the mierkats
all mixed up together. I rushed off wildly shrieking, ran like the
wind. When I got there I found it was the mierkats chasing the dog!…
I brought them back to the house, but have that feeling of a great
throbbing cricket ball under my left shoulder which I always have when
I run too fast or lift things... I wish you could have gone with me to
Camps Bay it twice I went. I was so delightful there sitting on the
rocks & watching the sea & the beautiful sand. I always long for you
when I am by the sea. I suppose it’s because we’ve been so happy
at the Kowie together. I wonder if we shall ever go there again…
