The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract. In a 5 June 1911 entry without an extract attached, he also comments that ‘On the 5th she wrote from the Victoria Falls Hotel; They arrived that morning about 10.30 (in the excursion train of about 130 people.’. There are some differences between this transcription and the version that appears in The Letters….

…We got here this morning, dear. The journey was delightful. You
know how I love the train. The Kalahari is the most beautiful part of
the journey, wide wide spreads of lager bush with tall camel thorn &
other tree just here & there. The trees are so glorious all the way
from Bulawayo, not dense dark forest, but unreadable
beautiful park-like scenery. We could see the mist from far, miles
away. The Hotel is a curious pretty place, the separate houses built
on poles to keep them from the damp. unreadable The are only
two ^is only one^ post a week here…
