The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that ‘She encloses an invitation & her acceptance to distribute the Sports Association prizes at De Aar on the ?31st.’.
…It is such a glorious day, when ‘the genius of god doth show’.
It seems almost wicked to be working in the house. I am feeling so
well the last days: perhaps it’s the weather, perhaps it’s the
thought of ‘going in a puff-puff to see the old man!’…
I should like to be there at the Sports… I suppose none of the other
women will mind my being asked to give the prizes out…
