The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract. He also comments, about the meerkats, that his dog Ollie ‘used to be so fond of them, used to let the little ones lie on her & suck her teats. But one day one of the big ones, Tommie, I think, bit her, & she never trusted one of them again!’.
…I have just got your beautiful long letter from Prieska & De Aar.
No one writes such interesting letters as you… The last three days
here have been quite cool & I have recovered like a bit of dried up
old seaweed put back into salt water. It’s curious how deadly heat
is to me now. I didn’t like to say anything to you, but there were
some days last week when I really thought I was dying… The mierries
are so well & so fat. Sancho is too sweet. He dances round & round
after his tail, & runs to me whenever I call him. They have never been
so tame. If only Ollie would be friends with them….
I am really wonderfully lively the last three days…
