Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that Olive Schreiner’s comments concern From Man to Man. There are some differences between this transcription and the version that appears in The Letters....
…I have not yet been able to write… That one chapter is longer
than Peter Halket. Now come two little chapters; then a very long one;
& then the first, & much the longest, part of the book is done; then
comes the shorter second part, but which I love. Oh, if I could be
under conditions to finish it… I’ve set my heart so on finishing
it before the end comes. I could do so much work now if I was strong &
could get fresh air. ^My brain has never been so clear & strong in one
way.^ I tried to go out for a walk yesterday but I came staggering back
& am only now recovering from it…
