The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract. The excised name is that of Julia Solly. There are some differences between this transcription and the version that appears in The Letters....
…I have got a letter from Mrs… asking me to be one of the vice
presidents of the Woman’s Suffrage League they are starting in Cape
Town. She also sends me some papers on the C. D. Acts which I’ll

novel all other matters seem to me small compared to matters of sex, &
prostitution is the most agonising central point. Prostitution,
especially the prostitution of men of themselves to their most brutal
level can’t really be touched till man not only says but feels woman
is his equal, his brother human to whom he must give as much as he
takes; & the franchise is one step towards bringing that about...
The novel Schreiner refers to is From Man to Man.
