Legend
The Extracts of Letters to Cronwright-Schreiner were produced by Cronwright-Schreiner in preparing The Life and The Letters of Olive Schreiner. They appear on slips of paper in his writing, taken from letters that were then destroyed; many of these extracts have also been edited by him. They are artefacts of his editorial practices and their relationship to original Schreiner letters cannot now be gauged. They should be read with considerable caution for the reasons given. Cronwright-Schreiner has written the date and where it was sent from onto this extract, and that ‘She gave me my first lesson in golf & went round the links with me &c.’.
1 …It was very very beautiful to have you here. I don’t know when in
2my life I have spent such a happy two days. I think even that little
3rest made your face look less tired…

5 It was so beautiful to have you here dear. It seems to me wherever I
6look I see your face. You know you are more beautiful to me now than
7you ever have been. You are really more beautiful if your face were
8painted…
