The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. 4My dear Lucy

Thank you for your sweet letter. I have had no answer to my last from
Mrs Murray but when I was at Lady Innes’s there came a letter
addressed in Mrs Murray’s handwriting to D Lady Innes’s care. It
was addressed to Doctor Murray. Th But as the Innes’s told me he
never stayed there & for anything they knew might still be in Cape
Town I couldn’t help thinking it must be a mistake & in absence of
mind she must have put Dr Murray’s name instead of mine. Of course I
left it all at the Inneses; Could you let her know in case it was
meant for me. I don’t know where to address to her.

The Pretoria woman’s society has been hood-winked by Mrs MacFadyen
even more than we were. They never elected her as chair man, & their
are going to have nothing to do with the National Committee nor are
they going to send any petition in union with other societies. I saw
the paper she sent them in which she said Mrs Brown had elected her to
stand on the National Committee (she mentions no one else) & that she
never said one word about all the matters in the inset. She really is
a wicked woman. I am so sorry Mrs Murray will be away so long: Please
send her this letter or tell her what I say.

I am enjoying the cold weather so much.

My dear love to you & the sweet children
