The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. In letters dated December 1896, Schreiner refers to the bicycle given to her by a friend of Cronwright and her learning to ride it, thus the dating of this part-letter. Schreiner was resident at The Homestead, Kimberley, from mid 1894 to late 1898. The name of the addressee is indicated by content. The start and end of the letter are missing.

but I suppose you will spend Xmas in Cape Town. I do hope there won’t
be very many people on the Dunvegan; there ought not to be at this
time of year. What does the agent think. I am going to take some nice
restful books for us to read if we are well enough. I am learning to
ride a bicycle, a friend of Cron’s has given me a lovely one. You &
Miss Greene ought to get two in England
