Legend
The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in De Aar from November 1907 until she left South Africa for Britain and Europe in December 1913, but with some fairly lengthy visits elsewhere over this time.

Oh Will my dear dear Laddie, Do go to Europe for a holiday & to take
the Nauheim treatment this year. You don’t know my old brother how
ill you looked when you had that big case on, your face haunts me. I
know Olivers one wish is that you should come home this year. The
boy’s heart is set on it. I send you his letter I don’t think he
would mind my doing it. I don’t think you should wait for Ursulas
visit, as the Nauheim treatment time will then be over. Will, you must
take care of yourself Don’t wait till you are as I am, for whom
death is the only friend.

Great things are happening in Cape Town. I hope the Progressives will
vote with the labourites & Hertzogites. The racial parties must break
up. If I could form a ministry you would be prime minister Jagger
treasurer minister of commerce or Railways John X Treasurer, Duncan
Minister of Education Jannie somewhere in the ministry, but not head
of the defence force, & so on – a quite non party ministry! – and
a quite impossible.

As for the parties as they exist now I don’t care for one two pence
more than the other. I hope Cron will never go in for politics again,
whether I am dead or alive, unless he goes in as a labour man.

Good bye my old brother
Your little sister
Who loves you much more than you know

Don’t trouble to write if busy. Just return the boys letter. I never
like showing letters sent to me to any one, but I’m sure Oliver
wouldn’t mind my showing you this.
