The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner stayed in the Cape Town house belonging to her brother Will and sister-in-law Fan in late December 1911 and moved to Blauuberg in January 1912.
Dear Betty,

"Thou art so near but yet so far." I’ve been hoping against hope
that some one would offer to drive me out for an afternoon but no one
does!

When are you coming back here?

I went up by train the other day as far as Kno Houw Hoek – however
the name is spelt – just to see the view from the top of the
mountain & to see the country. "Houw Hoek" is very pretty & the
country about pre interesting, but the heat was very great & I got
hardly any view from the top of the mountain I should say as there was
a haze over everything. It seems to me it must be very lovely up there
in winter & spring – but don’t you find it very hot in summer? And
then I can never see you if you’re up there! It was beautiful to see
Alice looking so young & lovely. I do long to see more ^of you both^.

^From the 1st of Jan I shall be at Schmitts’ Cafe at Muizenberg. You
must come & see me there sometimes, because Muizenberg is cooler than
any other place. So you can come for the cool air & for me. ^

Give my love to the dear children they are charming
Olive.
