Darling Betty,

I tried to come & see you this morning & bring you some sugar but the
heat was so great & oppressive that before I got to the bus I was done,
& had to turn back. It is this sudden change to heat after the cold
that breakes one down. I do hope your cold is better. I didn’t send
on Alice’s letter because I thought you would telephone for me to
send it if you wanted it sent, & & you might be coming here & just
miss it. Every one seemed so utterly sad & tired at Will’s. I just
lay on the sofa. I couldn’t even talk to Dot. I think the want of
proper food is making us all ill & weak. It is not the dying, but the
never being fully & highly nourished that is the horror of starvation.
To be living & yet not alive, I seem to be getting into a state in
which I don’t want even to read the papers.

Wednesday morning.

Your card has come I am going to take Alices letter to you, as it will
be quicker than posting it: but I’ll post this as you may not be in
when I get to Tavistock Sq. The little girl opposite has measles, &
her mother is very afraid of getting it as she has never had it

Much love to you dear
