The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The month and year have been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident at Porchester Place from early April 1917 until August 1920, when she left Britain for South Africa.
Dear Betty
I am so sad to have missed you. I would take a taxi & drive up to your
rooms only, I’m sure to find you out. I suppose you will go to spend
Xmas with Alice or your brother. The only reason why I’m sorry to be
here is that I’m so far from you. I haven’t seen or spoken to a
human being this week but ^tomorrow^ tonight I am going to a woman’s
meeting to hear Haldane speak on Education. If you should care to go
too could you meet me at my Doctors Dr Ettie Sayer 5 35 Upper Brook
Street just a few doors off Park Lane, near the top. I’m not quite
sure if 35 is the address but you’ll see a large Bl plate on the door
with her name. I shall be there at 4.30 finishing my treatment & from
there will go straight to the meeting. If you call there we could go
together. Her address may n be 34 but I think its 35. Its just a few
doors after you turn out of Park Lane into Upper Brook Street. I long
to see you.
I hope you had a nice time with Alice.
I seldom, hardly ever go out before 10.30. Then I often go to my
^but sometimes I go in the afternoon.^
