The Project is grateful to Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town, for kindly allowing us to transcribe this Olive Schreiner letter, which is part of its Manuscripts and Archives Collections. The year of this letter is derived from the postmark on an attached envelope, which also provides the address it was sent to. Schreiner was resident at Porchester Place from early April 1917 until August 1920, when she left Britain for South Africa. The final insertion is written on the envelope.

Darling May
I thought this was your wedding day, but wasn’t quite sure.
Thank you for your wonderful present, which came tonight. Alice Greene
will be here on Tuesday evening & we will have it for supper. I would
like to roast it; but as I have not any pot I will have to have it
boiled. I will put some nice stuffing in it, which makes it go further.
So many happy returns of your wedding day to both of you: I always
think of your marriage as one of the most satisfactory marriages I
know. May you be spared long to each other.
I am glad to hear all has gone so well with Islay. If you should see
her before you go, give her my love. I am so glad you are having fine
weather here.
Love to you both
^Could you find out from Jarvis the address of Queens ^^Anne^^ Mansions.^
