The date has been written on this letter in an unknown hand. Schreiner was resident in Adam Street from the end of December 1916 to the end of March 1917.

3Thank you for your dear old note. I am sorry I wrote as I did, but I
4am completely broken down the stone in the kidney being even worse
5than the heart. I was just feeling at the worst of everything when my
6landlady came in & said she would want my room at the end of the week.
7I just felt in despair as I am too ill to go about looking for rooms.
8But my doctor told me of a place where on her recommendation they
9would take me. They are too expensive for me to keep but I shall go in
10there on Monday, till I am well enough to look about. With a German
11name it is practically impossible to get rooms. Poor young Biet I
12often think of him.

16I will be here till next Monday my address will then be 9 Porchester

22You will have heard that it is young Jan Bisset Jim Bisset’s only
23son not who was killed. He was shot by accident on his way home. They
24say poor Jim Bisset seems almost out of his mind. He seems to have no
25hold on life left.

27Its such a comfort to me to know you & Fan are in London even if I
28don’t often see you.

30^I have some letters from the Cape but none from Cron. He writes
31regularly every week so it must be lost.^
