Dear Betty

Here I am sitting in May’s pretty little drawing-room. I got here on
Monday afternoon. Yesterday it poured with rain, but to-day is fine &
May & I went for a little walk on the Common & round the tiny lake.
They have the dearest little house here, just a picture, the garden is
lovely with little arches of roses They seem most happy in their
little home. May looks quite another person, much stronger than she
did. The only sorrow is that Dr Parker has begun to be troubled with
asthma. He has sent for Tucker’s Remedy, which has cured me. I do
hope it will do him good. It ought to be here the day after tomorrow.
I like him very much but May is an angel, so sweet & loving. I have
written to Mrs Edward Greene to tell her how nice it is here; the
baths are said to be so good for rheumatism It would be so good if she
came here a little while I was here.

Do you think the Botha Smuts party are sure to come in at the next
election
?

I had 12 of my strong hard round teeth taken out last week because the
doctors in London said I had inflammation in my jaw - but I think its
just a new theory they are having every ones teeth out!! They have had
all Miss Hobhouses teeth out, whether it is that or some other cause I
cannot tell but she is quite strong & well now you wouldn’t know her:
she looks 15 years younger. She is in Holland now staying with Dr
Jacobs
helping with the woman’s peace work there.

Are you & Alice coming to England. London is awful to live in now –
its like Hell. But in the country its all right.

Good bye dear. Tell Alice to write to me & give me the political news
if you can’t. You would love to see Mays little home
