Dear Betty
I know not where thou art wandering or what thou art doing or dreaming
of! Write & tell me; & beg Alice to write. What are your plans? Where
are you going next.
I’m not suffering at all as I always do in South Africa, but I’m
not very strong & can’t climb even the stairs without difficulty –
otherwise I’m all right. I’ve got a lovely book by Rabindranath
Tagore the Indian writer which I’m sending to Anna Purcell’s care
for you. If you’ve got it already & don’t want it send it to Cron.
But it seems to me just the book you would like.
If you pass de Aar any time try & stop there for a day & see Cron &
the animals & my little house & garden. It seems so long since I saw
them; but I ought to be only grateful. I’m here & not in the heat of
Africa. Oh, why is my native country so deadly to me. Any other
country suits my health better, at least any European country.
I’m too tired to write really about anything.
