Dear Laddie

We passed Madeira this morning & I got a great pile of English letters
from my dear friends.

Alice Corthorn writes she is coming down to Southampton to meet me.
And Constance Lytton & her dear old mother have come up to London on
purpose to see my & save my going down to Knebworth.

If Ol can’t go with me to Italy Pethick Lawrence says a great friend
of his a Mr Harold Large will take me, whom Constance Lytton says is
one of the most beautiful tenderhearted characters she knows. I shall
see when I arrive whether I can leave at once or stay in England till
New Year. They say the trains are so crowded in Xmas week by people
going to the continent that its hardly possible to travel.

It was beautiful to see land at Madeira today. I think the lying so
absolutely still & resting entirely has done me great good.

Today when the ship was resting at Madeira I dressed & went out. A
Miss & Mrs Hendersen are on board & they came & spoke to me. They say
they came out with Olly & Ursie & were loud in their praises. They say
everyone on board admired Oliver so much & his great tenderness & care
over Ursie. She’s a lucky little person!

Alice Corthorn has aged very much, but she is sweeter & more beautiful
in spirit than ever. I have seen Adela & Con Lytton. unreadable Adela
